If the operating system fails to start, we usually reinstall it, which means that we can say "goodbye" to any data stored on the system partition. Emergency Boot CD gives you the possibility of salvaging your data and it can also help you attempt to fix the operating system. It is a bootable operating environment, which includes a wide array of utilities, for scanning and repairing the registry, recovering passwords and more.

There is no need to go through an installation process. Emergency Boot CD comes as a virtual image file, which you have to burn on a disc. Also, you don't have to worry about compatibility or hardware requirements, since Emergency Boot CD is a DOS-based environment.

When you are done burning the virtual image to a CD, you can restart your computer and boot from this disc. This will load the aforementioned DOS-based operating system. It is not much to look at, but it can prove to be invaluable if Windows crashes. Once loaded, the OS will display a small menu, with options for opening a file browser, for recovering the Windows password, defragmenting the registry, managing disk partitions and more.

The file manager is almost identical to Volkov Commander. You can use the same hotkeys to select different disks or partitions, view information about disk space usage and more. If you don't have access to your main operating system anymore, this file browser will help you find your valuable data and send it to other partitions or back it up on removable drives.

Some of the options on the main menu will take you to a series of sub-menus. For example, the partition manager consists of a large number of options, for creating, formatting or backing up partitions, deleting them, wiping their files or free space and much more. You can find enough tools in the menu system for all sorts of problems which could be the cause of the main operating system's crash.

Pros

You can boot an emergency operating system from a disc. It includes a wide range of useful utilities, which can help you fix the operating system.

Cons

A bootable USB version of the OS would be more than welcomed. Emergency Boot CD gives you a fighting chance when the operating system fails, so you don't have to reinstall it.
